The New York Times has published a county level map of the latest unemployment values for the United States. The resulting map of the impacts of the recession is vivid. A related article describes the regional and demographic variation in unemployment in the United States. The article places the capital of the recession in Imperial County, California (just east of San Diego), which has the country's highest unemployment rate at 22.6%.

Hey Matt,
That map is a good starting point for showing the areas hit hardest by the recession. However I would like to see a map that tracks the highest percentage of changes of unemployment within the last 5 years. Some places on the NYT map show low unemployment, but we all know those places also have extremely low population density as well, which slightly skews the information.

But the unemployment statistics are a rate, rather then actual numbers, so the size of the population makes no difference (except in the types of businesses that might be located in the county).
