This BBC article looks at he work of private independent small-scale water deliverers in Nigeria, an oil-rich country that lacks public water distribution systems. The article also compares the cost of water in developed versus developing countries and, of course, those in poorer countries pay more for water than those in richer countries.

I looked up the population of Nigeria. A 2007 almanac says 132 million in 2006. Seeking a comparison I found two numbers for 1973 – very widely different numbers. Nigeria said 80 million while the UN said 60 million. This divergence tells us something about the country, they don’t know much.
In any event it looks as if the population perhaps doubled in 33 years. This means that over the last 33 years the supply of food and health had to have improved dramatically. While the story tells us how terrible things are today, from the standpoint of heath and nutrition the Nigerians likely have never had it so good.
The population is still climbing exponentially. This almost ensures that no municipal water supply or sewers are in sight.
