European Union officials are reporting that Iceland could be fast tracked for membership of the European body by 2011, if the island country wants to join. Iceland, which became the first country to change its government due to the global financial crisis and thus has the world's first openly gay leader, has not yet decided whether or not to join the EU.

With a population of 0.3 million Iceland is on a par with places such as Toledo, Ohio or Bakersfield, Cal. Except as a curiosity, does it really matter much if they join the EU?
Yes it matters for them but no one else.
