Former enemy of the U.S., Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya, has been elected as the chairman of the 53-member state African Union. Gaddafi vows to create a United States of Africa during his one year tenure as chairman, with a vision of bringing Africa together in a multinational organization with EU-like cooperation. An expert calls Gaddafi's plan a "ludicrous fantasy." Last August, Gaddafi was named the "King of Kings of Africa" by a group of 200 tribal leaders.
