As former rain forest and jungle farms are being abandoned as their proprietors move to urban areas, those abandoned farms are growing into new rain forest land. This new rain forest land, by some accounts, is replacing clear cut rain forest at a ratio of 50 to 1. Thus, some say that the rain forests are not in danger as they once used to be.

Hey Matt,
this is very interesting, and it somewhat echos the sentiment from an article I had read recently about the adaptability of forest ecosystems. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the article, only that it was extremely interesting. Anyways.. keep up the good work!

I do not believe it.
This story dwells on Panama. How silly, as the area of Panamanian forests is globally trivial. The Amazon is not.
I have experience in the Amazonas (Brazil), around Manaus, a thousand miles up the Amazon River. I was there decades before the massive forest clearing began. Only aborigines dwelled there and one risked his life to venture into the forest. The naked natives had blow guns and curare, else they would be helpless.
The soil is very poor having been leached by high rainfall for eons. They had to get their protein from eating monkeys. It’s a wonder they had survived.
