New international population data is available from the U.S. Census Bureau so I've updated my listing of the world's most populous countries, the 23 countries with a population above 50 million. In the two years since I updated the list, Nigeria grew by 15 million people to over 146 million and thus rose to number eight in the rankings. Ethiopia also grew dramatically, adding 8 million people in two years.

Nigeria’s people, even with it’s huge oil exports, are poor. With this high population growth the country is a ticking time bomb. When will Nigeria explode into the kind of unrest and violence taking place in the rest of west Africa?

As for Ethiopia, it is already a disaster. And will become worse with more droughts, famine, and civil war.
