Former President Martti Ahtisaari of Finland, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Wednesday, spent some time while in the spotlight working to garner support for international recognition of Kosovo. According to The New York Times, Ahtisaari stated, "Kosovo is independent and it will remain independent." Currently, 54 countries around the world recognize Kosovo as an independent country with Russian and Serbian opposition keeping complete international recognition at bay.

How can Marti Ahtisaari be so sure that Kosovo will remain an independent republic, when after 10 months it got only 52 recognitions. What kind of country will it be without UN recognition?
I recall when Finland was at war with the USSR prior to our entre into WWII. We (the US public) were on the side of the Fins as we saw it as a sort of a David and Goliath fight.
This was inconvenient as that put us on the Nazi side. Despite the fact that the USSR (Stalin) being the greatest murderer of all time he was to be our most important ally against Hitler’s Germany.
Today the Fins are only about 5 million. That’s about Cook County (Chicago). They’re not even 1% of world population.
I feel that the decision taken by USA for the recognition of the independence of Kosovo without the approval of the UN is fully wrong. Are they ready to approve the independence of all other minorities who seek independent states? What about Kurds?
