My colleague Andrew Alden of Geology at About.com tackles the issue of the number of tectonic plates on earth. While geologists are fond of saying that there are "about a dozen major ones," some would like a specific number. Andrew writes how that number is a difficult one to determine. It reminds me of the frequently debated geographic question on the number of continents on earth.

THEY DONT KNOW FOR SURE, isnt that clear enough for you??? jesus christ
There are tons but there are 12 major ones.
What help is that if it doesn’t answer the question?!?!?!
