The blog atlas(t) found and provides this fascinating ZIP Code Map showing the geographic distribution of ZIP Codes in the United States by state, based on the first two or three digits of the ZIP Code.
Generally, the first three digits of a Zip Code represent a region of a State. A “headquarters town” is then assigned as a central mail collection point within that region, with “01″ as its last 2 digits. (If the town is big enough, it may also have “02 or “03″). Then each remaining smaller town and village is assigned its last 2 digits based on the town’s Alphabetical Order from A to Z. Some government agencies and large companies have their own zip codes, thus a simple “20500″ and nothing else, is sufficient address for the U.S. President, 20300 the Secretary of Defense, etc., etc.
