The United Nations General Assembly voted today to select new non-permanent members of the Security Council. The General Assembly selected Japan, Austria, Turkey, Mexico, and Uganda to serve for 2009 and 2010 on the fifteen-member body. These five new members of the Security Council take their seats on January 1, 2009.

Has Germany ever been a member? Italy? Interesting that Japan, a member of the Axis in WWII now has a place at the premier world peace organization – and rightfully so!
Japan was rebuilt by the U.S. after WWII. Now, the fact that Turkey has been invited to sit on the SC, that is incredible and offers more of a window into middle-eastern affairs.
