Americans' Political Literacy As Bad As Geographic Literacy

By , About.com GuideOctober 16, 2008

Follow me on:

I am mollified by the news that Americans' political literacy might just be as bad as their geographic literacy. In a recent poll, only 18% of Americans could correctly identify the controlling party of the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. secretary of state and the prime minister of the United Kingdom.

Just to test myself, my answers are:
1) the democratic party
2) Condoleeza Rice
3) Gordon Brown

Will someone please tell me if these answers are correct?

Only 18%, Matt, it’s enough to make me hold my head and weep for my ignoramus countrymen. The votes of the ignorant 82% can swamp those of the 18% informed.

Re comment no. 1. Why do I have this stinking suspicion you knew your answers were right before you asked?

But actually, there is a problem with your answer. “Democratic” with a small “d” means something quite different than with a capital “D.”

Re the most gracious comment no. 2. I confess I did not learn much from, nor was I much amused by your post.
