GPS Sabotage

By , About.com GuideOctober 3, 2008

Follow me on:

An article from MSNBC discusses the possibility that GPS units could be interfered with to show incorrect time or location. There are two methods by which this can be done. The serious effects of such sabotage could result in plane crashes and exploding power stations.

Whilst on GPS, a system completed owned and opersated by the USA, settings can be changed in momenst so over reliance at sea or anywhere elese without real navogation knowledge and practice would put the user at risk. EU will have an equivalent sytem soon The Russians have always had one but let it degenerate.
Whislt on navigtaion, The CHniese were the first to discover America, not CC. Also the maps used by CC showed the existence of the Americas anyway – copied from the great explorations by Zheng He and the injection of Chinese almanacs and astronomy in the 15th century to Europe, and perhaps even causing the renaissance to happen.

I don’t think the source of this article (Discovery Channel) is totally accurate. I am not up on the latest GPS, but some of the things mentioned can’t be done. American TV is always sensationalistic. That said, I wouldn’t go on a ocean voyage without a knowledge of navigation and a sextant, just in case the old GPS went on the blink. I do think it is remiss of our US Naval academy to stop teaching celestial navigation to the cadets.

Ironic that Rich Teo posted his observation about Zheng He being earlier than Christopher Columbus on the day before Leif Ericson Day. (Misspelled “Eriksen,” did I? Doesn’t matter. My Erickson ancestors spelled their last name so many different ways that I’ve quit counting.) Welcome to the “probably beat Columbus” club, Zheng He! (We’d all love to be certain, wouldn’t we?)
