Russia's parliament today unanimously approved a resolution to recognize the Georgian breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent countries. The measure still needs to be approved by President Medvedev. International recognition is not likely for these areas of Georgia which most see as a backlash to the declaration and recognition of independence of Kosovo by the west last February.
8/29 Update: Medvedev did approve the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. As of this writing, only Russia has recognized the two entities within Georgia but Belarus has declared its intention to do so soon.

I ♥ RUSSIA !!!
really Gregory?? Congratulations you’ve been brain washed
) poor girl, look to yourself!)))))))))))
What if the countries of the world recognized not South Ossetia independence but “Ossetia” independence (North and South Ossetia combined). This would sort of cause a problem for Russia?
You have to wonder what Georgia and it’s allys think about all this. To put it in other terms, (very theoretical example)if Hawaii decided it wanted to be a seperate country, and China or something agreed with it, the rest of the US wouldn’t be too happy with China and Hawaii, and would only cause more problems in the end.
I am afraid the west and NATO tweeked the wrong screw by steadily moving NATO membership ever closer to Russias border and supplying more and more military hardware to Georgia. And as for the recognition of the 2 breakaway provinces, just think of the western approach to Kosovo ! What is good for the goose is good for the gander, after all. The west loused it up, again.

We need to learn that Abkhazia and Ossetia are very distinct ethnically from Georgia. They are not “unnatural” states. Small, but there are lots of small countries that do just fine.
