The U.S. Census Bureau has released a fascinating report, Fertility of American Women: 2006, that is based on American Community Survey data from 2006. I discovered that the highest rate of births in the 12 months before the survey occurred to women who had graduate or professional degrees. This seemed to stand what I had thought about educational attainment and fertility on its head. However, overall, those in that highest educational attainment still had the fewest total children over their lifetime when compared to their cohort. I speculate that the high fertility rate was due to the large number of Baby Boomers entering their mid-30s and deciding to have kids at that time.
