Metropolitan Los Angeles was struck by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake just before noon on Tuesday. Information about the earthquake, about 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, near Chino Hills. Specific information about this earthquake can be found online on the USGS website. There are reports of localized damage and objects that fell from shelves. I provide information about California earthquakes and earthquakes in general.

I expected the typical delays while waiting at LAX – but not an earthquake. It didn’t actually cause any delays, just a little excitement. As a Southerner, I have never experienced a quake of any magnitude. The floor felt like something was rumbling below – and then we all noticed the columns in the terminal were swaying back and forth. I stood there thinking “I didn’t think earthquakes lasted this long.” Interesting experience.
The quake was downgraded to a 5.4. I live about 20 miles from the epicenter, and there was some “rockin’ and rollin’”, but there was no damage.
Heard from my son who is drummer for the Glenn Miller Orchestra — they were in Redlands and he experienced his first earthquake in the hotel shower! Since no one was injured we had a good laugh envisioning him trying not to run outside — he said keeping his balance was very difficult in the shower, he thought the hotel was going to collapse, and it lasted forever!
