Independence Day in Other Countries

LiveScience.com has an article describing how seven different countries celebrate their independence days. I'll add my perspective on Israel, where I spent independence day two years ago. Since the Hebrew calendar begins in the evening, the fireworks celebrations take place in the evening and the following day businesses are closed, giving citizens a chance to recover from the late night. The daytime after the fireworks is the time of barbecues and family get-togethers in the parks. It's a pretty good system; maybe the U.S. should move their fireworks to the night of July 3?

Many cities in the US actually already have their fireworks displays on the 3rd.

I like that idea…fireworks on the 3rd of July…holiday on the 4th of July.
