The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that they expect the world population to cross the seven billion mark in the year 2012, a mere four years from now. The world added its six billionth resident in 1999. Today, the population is approximately 6.7 billion. World population growth is definitely slowing down however, as it took about 12 years for the world population to rise from five billion to six billion while the increase from six to seven billion is a 13 year time span. That is good news for our planet. What do you think? Post your comments below.

Too many people is in the final analysis the only problem we humans have. All our other “problems”, the energy crisis, falling water tables, CO2 emissions are merely reflections of too much demand on the planet – too many people. When I was born world population had never been higher. At about 1.7 billion (now 6.7 biillion)it was about 6 times higher than in the world when China and India and Egypt and Greece and Rome peaked. Consider, fewer people lived under the vast Roman Empire than live in Mexico today.
I think we have already passed Peak (conventional)Oil. Every year we emit more CO2 – the Kyoto Protocal was a political fraud. There is no replacement for petroleum. Biofuels probably do more harm than good. Hydrogen as fuel defies Laws of Thermodynamics.
The question is: How do we get rid of about 5 billion people before our civilization collapses?
i think malthaus had it right. too many people too little resources. a crash has to occur. mabye a superbug, birdflu, the revelations of john, something will happen soon. we brought it upon ourselves. u will see.
Yes, the earth simply has too many people and we are feeling the effects. Food shortages will continue as will other types of shortages. Birth control has to occur. The Catholic Church, the Mormon Church, etc has to think of the planet and not just expanding their own numbers. But it’s not just the churches, it’s our problem. If we don’t take action now, nature will begin solving the population situation for us as will governments when they find their very existence threatened
with the advent of television , that being the best source of birth control. long ago the farmers were into having as many as possible to help in the fields, today the urbanites stop after one or two children , then turn on the television after work.
Hi, Mr. Herman Echevarria brings up a good point regarding having lots of children to work in the fields (my grandmother was born in rural Russia in 1890 and was one of 13 children for that reason). However, that in my view is the ONLY reason, to have more than 3 kids. I realize putting a limit on the amount of children to have would be unpopular (especially among religious Catholics), I think once people understood the problems associated with overpopulation, people would be willing to limit their family to 3 children at the most. I think this would be very good for the future for all of us. As for me, I am an only child, my mother was one of two children and I don’t have any children (if I did, I would have two at the most–if that) so I practice what I preach!
This reminds me of the old Star Trek episode in which the Enterprise was stuck on a planet in which was so overcrowed that no one could even move or turn around for lack of space.Perhaps we should place a number on everyone’s forehead and have a lottery and draw one thousand numbers. These unfortunate people would be summarily executed.
Education is the way to lower population growth, particularly education for women, and womens’ rights.
When women are able to work freely in an atmosphere created equally through the global markets, you’ll see more prosperity, and therefore less children.
It’s not the growth of countries like the USA, Canada, Australia after all…
yes it is a true fact that we do have many people on this soon to be tiny earth. But the fact of the matter is we bought this upon ourselves trying to make life easier with more kids to help out on farms. That was in the olden days now there are more single than married women and most of those with children and they often times struggle with one and don’t go on to have another. But if we can take responsibilty and protect ourselves we may likely see a population growth hault. And it is just plain ignorant an wrong for some one one to say we should have a raffel or something of that sort to pick off the worlds population. Because they will more than less change their opinion if they were one of those unlucky few
We do have too many people on this planet. But who are we supposed to get rid of? Everyone in the world is somebody’s mother, father, aunt, uncle, cousin, daughter, son, husband, wife, caregiver, or best friend. What if somebody you loved had to be killed, just because there were “too many people”? Think.
This planet was not meant to last forever when created by GOD. How quickly the planet’s resources are diminished is up to us; thinking in terms of conservation and recycling in a much greater degree than we do. Everyone of us can make a difference; let our conscience be our guide…if that doesn’t fit your personality…let common sense tell you the consequences…problem is we cannot do the thinking for everyone…perhaps public-awareness campaigning would do a great service. Knowledge is power! The problem with some is “Ignorance is bliss” … that is until food disappears from the grocer’s shelves and that dripping water faucet no longer drips. Our CREATOR is leaving it up to us, but never fear…HE will come and save us from ourselves inspite of ourselves.
I’m pretty sure the CREATOR is a SHE… men don’t have children generally.
yes, the population explosion is possibly the largest problem the world will have to deal with. The solution is to ensure that resources are efficiently managed so everyone gets a fair share. The rich need less so the poor can have more. I know this sounds like Socialism but is the only way. Otherwise we will have to colonise the solar system.
Its 9pm in Queensland Australia I look at http://www.worldometer.info and it says world population 6,792,830,000 increasing at 270 thousand to 380 thousand new born babies per day. Why the variation? Expidentual growth, which means in 2012 we will hit 7 billion. Reading Revelation and I see God is precise with numbers. The number 7 comes up a lot (700 times in the Bible)… not 6.9 or 7.004 but 7. This is not a conspiracy theory…what do you think?
yea yea
Yes, all of us must parish. Most of us on this page are willing to die to save the planet, right. Well,….. what are you waiting on. You agree the population must decline. Come on, be that rightious human and croke for the cause. Robert, Don and Riodog will show us the way and start the example. Feloows you are going to have to off yourselves because not to many people on the planet are willing to die. Preach your cause and then set an example.
“Whatever” why dont you start us off and sacrifice yourself…
know i said that scientest has said that 2012 is end of the world so that wrong decision of scientest so the world population is true but never think about the population of all our the world in 1 minute 72 persons birth and in 1 minutes there is 72 people daied in all our the world thats my point i am most beautiful and intellegent scientist in the world mr samiullah if you have any kind of question to for me than i give you the email you must ask samiullahshaikh41@yahoo.com
As Edward norton said let it all happen in a movie then every thing will be fine
zombie is a good way to reduce population don’t you think so?
men create zombie => zombie reduce population
i thought the world would end 2012, on the myan calender of course, would the world end any time soon? my theory is that the planets with line up exactly with the sun, what do you think?
I wanted to thank you for this wonderful read!! I certainly enjoyed every bit of it.
