Former Geography at About.com intern Amanda Briney completed her internship and thus, in honor of her great work and dedication, she has been promoted to Contributing Writer for Geography at About.com. She'll continue to provide us with regular articles about all aspects of geography as she completes her undergraduate degree over the next few months and looks ahead to graduate school in geography. Congratulations Amanda! If you think you have what it takes to be the next Geography at About.com Intern, let me know.

Let us all hope that Amanda takes a few courses about other ages of discovery before she writes much more. While most of US history focuses on European explorers, the history of exploration starts much, much earlier. You can go to the settlement of the Americas by those who walked to the Americas from Asia at the end of the last ice age 15,000 years ago who greeted Columbus and Magellan etc. or even the Vikings who settled Greenland and other “Newfoundlands” for many decades before they froze to death 1000 years ago when the climate changed from a long period of warmth to an age of cold, as it has hundreds of times in Earth’s history.
