The International Olympic Committee announced today the four final bid cities for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The four bid cities for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad are: Chicago (United States), Tokyo (Japan), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Madrid (Spain). The three cities that did not make this selection are Prague (Czech Republic), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar). The International Olympic Committee will select the host city for the 2016 Games on October 2, 2009. That city will join the growing list of host cities for the Olympic Games. My personal preference is for Rio de Janeiro as South America has never hosted the Olympic Games (neither summer nor winter!)

I would love to see it back in the US. I thought New York should have been awarded it last time. I would like it to be Chicago. If not, then Tokyo, on the condition that Tokyo can assure the IOC that the traffic won’t be a nightmare.

(3) David Parkin says:

It is time that a South American country was awarded the games. High level corruption has resulted in Olympics(Winter and Summer)taking place in North America far too often.

I agree with Matt and David that Rio should host the games. A beautiful city… and it’s time South America gets the gig.

Definetly it should be Rio De Janeiro who produced the Legend player & ambassador to the football world King “Pele”.

Hi all:

At first, I preferred Tokyo, but now I go along with most others here and select Rio. Give the samba people a chance to limbo down and host the Olympics. See what the South Americans can do to put on a show and I thin it would be a dandy as those folks know how to party down. Here’s hoping Rio gets it as my comment is number 7 here. Shabbat Shalom! :D

Folks: The olympics are not “carnivale” or the world cup. Rio is out. Asia just hosted in Peking. So,it is Madrid, Barcelona hosted in 92 and Chicago to follow Atlanta from 96 in USA. Both would be excellent. Chicago is my kind of town. It is a very corrupt city. Smart money is on Madrid.

I love the four cities competing, each one has its PROS and CONS. First, Tokyo is a super city that can put together a great show, however, Beijing just had them so no more Asian games until maybe 2020. Second, I am half Spanish, so I am definitely with Madrid, they have the spirit and the dedication to host the Olympics, however, I am afraid that since London is hosting them on 2012, I don’t think that the IOC will let them host them due to that they are both in the European continent, basically one next to the other. Third, Rio de Janeiro is just EXCELLENT! Brazilians are full spirited and just nice with tourists. They have just hosted the Pan American Games in 2007 and they were magnificent! I agree with everyone here that it’s time for South America to host the Summer Olympics, but, I’ve been hearing that there is a lot of corruption in the main beaches, but they can fix that easily. Finally, Chicago is where it’s time to host the games. The city is excellent, there is a huge diversity in this city itself so we can unite ourselves to give a warm welcoming to all the countries. But something I really don’t like about Chicago 2016 is their Architecture and venues which are not representing what America really has. I am an Architecture student and seriously we can do better with our venues, more dynamic structures, please hire Frank Gehry and Santiago Calatrava to design better stadiums and sporting venues. So all 4 cities have positives and negatives, we just need to wait to see what the IOC wants. 幸運を祈る東京! Buena Suerte Madrid! Boa Sorte Rio! Good Luck Chicago!

Definitely Rio de Janeiro!

Rio hosted the Pan American Games in 2007, and it was great! No problems was ocurred. And Brazil already is ready to host the World Cup in 2014.

Rio de Janeiro already proved that is a wonder place to Internacional Events with Pan2007.. In my opinion, the four cities are excelent, but remember that Brazilian people isn’t just carnival or samba. It’s a country where there are very serious people too. I hope that Brazil be the center of sport in 2014 (with WCS) and 2106 :)

Madrid is out because London is hosting the 2012 games.
Tokyo is out because Beijing just hosted it. My bet is either on Chicago or Rio. Rio may be the sentimental favorite, but Chicago will be able to manage security arrangements better.

Tokyo is out because Beijing just hosted it, Madrid is out because London is hosting the 2012 games. So it is between Chicago and Rio. Rio is the sentimental favorite, but Chicago may be able to guaranty better security arrangements.

I’ve been to Rio, and I just felt I was in this magical, exotic, sensual and tropical dream the whole time… it’s crazy! I’ve been traveling the world and I haven’t seen anything like Rio de Janeiro :D . Also, Brazil is becoming one of the most powerful economies in the world and they have experiencing hosting big events, I am pretty sure they will do a good job in the Olimpic Games… go for Rio!!!!!!!

(21) Leo says:

I’m Brazilian and I hope they do NOT pick Rio. The violence is getting worse and the government doesn’t care. The only people that are interested in the city hosting the Olympics are the people that can benefit from it. Most of the money invested will go to the corrupt people that don’t care about anybody but themselves.

(22) julio says:

I really hoe it to be in Rio, south amrica has never hosted it before, and the games are there to promote frindship. so I guess that everyone should have the chance to host it.

September 30, 2009 at 10:14 pm
(23) Owen says:

Leo, I’m sorry to hear about the violence in Rio, but do you think it will get better without the Olympics? Por “ordem e progresso,” I think Brazil needs to participate more in international arenas, like the UN, the G20, and now the Olympics. I hope it’s Rio, not only for South America but also for the possibility that African cities can become candidates in the future. Rio has a better chance of putting on a good show than anywhere else in South America. Mexico ’68, Rio ’16.

I think it should be Madrid! USA always has the spotlight on them! The olympics 2008 were in China and that would be stupid to choose Tokyo. And rio de janiero I don’t know because I am not from there. I am rooting for Madrid! Love that city!!!

I am brazilian, and live at Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for all comments about our beautiful city, but our problems with safety and violence is serious.
Rio de janeiro is beautiful and charming city with, but unsecured and violent. I’m not going to be sad if the Brazil lose.
I hope that our leaders improve the city not for the Olympic Games, but because the Brazilian citizens that live in Rio de janeiro.
When it is true, I will be very gratified with the Olympic Games in Rio!
I´m sorry for some gramatical error.
