The recent earthquake in China's Sichuan Province is the world's most populous nation's worst disaster in thirty years, since the catastrophic 1976 earthquake in Tangshan, which killed at least 255,000 people. Officials expect that the death toll from this week's 7.9 quake could approach 50,000. One of the very unfortunate effects of the earthquake is that families who lost a child in the disaster, lost any hope of descendants due to the country's One Child Law.

I heard this is sort of a retribution for cracking down on Tibet and especially killing spiritual monks. When you hurt the monks, you are messing around with their gods and the supernaturals. Same goes to Myanmar, the military junta sent in troops to arrest or killed their own highly revered monks, the answer to that murderous was the the Cyclone Nargis.

i disagree with u here~! U guys r mocking China for its normal political action to Tibet separatists. No doubt,this quake is a natural disaster to everyone who r human, not only to Chinese. Well,plz have the sympathy to those unfortunate people ,and plz don’t wrongly link this bad phenomenon.
Patrick, so, what about the US & the twin towers – have you thought about what that “retribution” was about? Some say the US has it’s nose in too many countries & at that time no one knew who had done what to whom. I agress with Julie, this is a natural disaster, what did the people in Louisiana do that they deserved retribution for? The answer is nothing that other people haven’t done. This notion of what goes around comes around is just not true. Did Hitler get what he deserved? The answer is no. Many bad people do bad things and never pay the price for any of it. Some people get put in jail for things they never did. I have one question, in light of natural disasters (earthquakes, hurricanes, tidal waves, etc., etc.) why does man need to create war? Natural disasters are natures way of population control. I’d rather die in a natural disaster than by a bullet from a stranger from some other country.
Well, I’ve probably said too much. China is one the greatest and oldest cultures in the world, we should have compassion for those who have to live with the loss and not illogically base it on God waking up one morning and deciding to create an earthquake because the Chinese government is not nice. Little far fetched.
