In the American Lung Association's annual State of the Air report, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was ranked as the country's worst for short-term particle pollution pushing Los Angeles into second place. Nonetheless, Los Angeles remains at the top of the lists of smog and long-term particle pollution. The worst air can be found in these eight metropolitan areas: Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno, Visalia-Porterville and Hanford-Corcoran, California; Washington-Baltimore; St. Louis; and Birmingham, Alabama.
