Five New Countries Recognize Kosovo

By , About.com GuideMarch 20, 2008

Follow me on:

While I reported on Tuesday that 28 countries had recognized Kosovo, an additional five jumped onto the bandwagon in the last two days. Kosovo's regional neighbors of Croatia, Hungary, and Bulgaria disappointed Serbia in their announcement along with Canada and Monaco. Canada was holding out due to concern that recognition would fuel their own internal independence movement in Quebec. It would appear that perhaps the dominoes are falling and global recognition of Kosovo as the world's 195th country might be on the horizon.

I really admire the courage of Canadians for making this important step despite the looming secession of Quebec – Bravo

how long will it take for the number of countries to be 200?
the world may never know.

If i held the reins of power, i would probably join- not Albania, not Serbia, but Macedonia, and scrap independence. Macedonia is fairly neutral, so it would be a nice alternative to two hotly rivaled ethnic groups.- maybe.

Kosovo has always been part of a country… it’s called Serbia. There should not be any recognition merely because of Western influence. Only 33 countries out of almost 200 said yes… mostly because of strong-handed Western backing. It’s terrible to see any country in the business of promoting the carving up other countries.
