Abbas Rejects Calls for Unilaterial Declaration of Independence

Wednesday February 20, 2008
Following in the wake of Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence on Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected a unilateral declaration from Israel in the near future. Reuters has the story and I have the article, Palestine is Not a Country.

I’m surprised Abbas didn’t go along with his aide who wanted to declare independence if Israel wasn’t acting in good faith.
We see caravans and continued settlement growth indiocating Israel is not.
The US should cut off aide to Israel if it continues to do so and the Israeli lobby here be damned. It has long violated UN Security resolution 242 passed after the 1967 land grab.

Moshe Dyan and Ben Gurion were right in saying the land taken then should be given back for peace. Not doing so soon after 1967 has led to the rise of terrorism.

We must solve this festering problem immediately and should be using all the “buttons” to do so.

The settlements are the main issue but this is a problem that has been created by the Israelis themselves. If they want to stay maybe they should - under Palestinian rule and live as the Arabs do in Israel.
