The U.S. Census Bureau has released population estimates for the metropolitan areas of the United States. Thus, I provide you with an updated listing of the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. In addition, just because I like you, I also provide a thorough breakdown of exactly what makes up the 30-county New York City metropolitan area, containing more than 7% of the population of the U.S.A.

Saying that “metro Sacramento” extends out to Truckee, CA (104 miles distant) and “metro Houston” extends out to Huntsville, TX (59 miles distant, home to the USA’s largest prison) is stretching it a bit.
Back when Baltimore and Wash.D.C. were each defined as separate metro areas, they each ranked lower. Now that Census has combined the two into one larger metro area (although economically and sociologically they are vastly different from each other) this shoots them up to 4th place. I’ll bet Las Vegas will reach this list soon at the phenomenal rate it’s growing.
Montreal and Toronto a few decades ago used to be in an approximate TIE for the largest city in Canada. Now Toronto has zoomed way ahead and is about twice the size of Montreal (largely because Quebec’s continual threats of secession scare the Anglo population off).
