A English commission has announced that, "Geography is at a crucial period in its development" and that "more needs to be done to make the subject relevant and more engaging for pupils." According to the BBC, "Inspectors have called for a shake-up with more fieldwork plus lessons on climate change, trade and the concepts of sustainable living and environmental footprints." In our present education system in high school here in the Philippines Geography subject is not being given more attention unlike in our time where we were asked to memorize the capital city of each country and to locate them in the globe. We even had contest on the fastest student who can locate a country. Even the capital city of our provinces and their location in the map is not being given priority. I think that Geography subject should be given priority since we are now being global.
I have been on a mission to institute Cultural Geography (AP) and World Geography as electives in my school. I have gone so far as to guarantee my school administrators better grades in US History, Economics, and Government for all who take them. I know I’m on the right track because it is shocking to witness the lack of basic knowledge in my US History classes.
I agree with and support both of the earlier comments. My middle school students may not remember everything they learn in World Geograpny, but many return – some, years later – to let me know how important or helpful this seventh grade class was for them as they completed high school and even college. I teach in a private school, where Geography is a core subject in seventh grade, and wish it was required for all American students. It is a blast to teach, as well!!
