While in 1990 South Korea had a ratio of 116.5 boys born for every 100 girls, the age-sex ratio has been rapidly declining since then. Today, girls are valued far more than they were in the past. The New York Times describes this societal change and speaks hopefully of the future for a more positive female outlook in society.

Let’s not beat around the bush. What we are saying is that changes in traditional Korean to more western cultural values have lead to a reduction in female infanticide. Unless we can say that there is a genetic reason for Koreans having more boys than girls in the past and that it has changed in the past 7 years!
