‘Smithsonian’ magazine, December 2007, reported on Europe’s most culturally diverse city, MARSEILLES on the Mediterranean. Cruise ships brought a whopping 460,000 visitors this year to Marseilles, up from just 19,000 a decade ago when the city had an image problem. Its hotel capacity will increase 50% in the next 4 years. It has 20 beaches, and fjords for scuba-diving. The city’s 800,000 people include 200,000 Moslems, 80,000 Jews, 80,000 orthodox Armenians, and 70,000 Comoro Islanders (blacks). But during the PARIS race riots, Marseilles remained quiet and calm, because its diverse groups have learned to live and dialogue together. In contrast to PARIS where third-world immigrants live isolated in the far suburbs, in Marseilles these immigrants live near the city center and are more visible and involved in the city, and their employment rate is higher. The city is reinventing itself as a center for higher educatiohn, tech innovation and tourism.
