The the December 10 deadline for negotiations looms closer without resolution, Kosovo leaders announced that they plan to unilaterally declare independence, "Very soon." Negotiators are expected to report to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by December 10 but not much has been accomplished between Serbia and the independence-minded province of Kosovo.

I served in Kosovo on a peacekeeping mission back in 2003. I believe granting Kosovo independence would be a very bad precedent to set. It is a very difficult situation there. I don’t know the right answer. Either way, one side will feel slighted.
It’s a plus for the Kosovars – the overwhelming majority of the people. It fulfills the principle of self-determination. But how ‘Easy” it has been. Just across the Mediterranean are a people – the Palestinians – who not only cannot get the Right of Return to their own homes now in Israel, but cannot even get the Israelis out of what remains of Palestine so that they can establish their own country. Its amazing what the world community can do when it puts its mind to it. And even more amazing when the look the other way while an entire culture is put at risk of extinction.

KOSOVO DESERVES INDEPENDENCE!
First of all the genius talking about the “Palestinians:” there is no such people and no such place, there never has been and never should be, it is Israel. Second, I hope the people of Kosovo have the life they want, but if it means a war, I hope they wait until my daughter serving with KFOR9 is out of the line of fire.

i personally think it is best for all sides. If there are 2 million people who are living unhappily in a country where they are hated, why not just give them their own country and let them do whatever they want with it? Not to mention the war back in the day. Serbia doesn’t NEED extra land, and they’ll have less drama without kosovars. i do miss the days of tito, and i wish we could have our jugoslavija back, but it’s never going to happen and we just have to settle.
