The United State Mint's special issue of fifty state quarters comes to an end in 2008 with the issuance of the last five state quarters over the course of the year. In 2008, the quarters representing the country's newest states - Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii - will be issued, ending the program begun in 1999. There might be a reprieve, however, as the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill to produce six territory quarters in 2009: District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. The bill now heads to the Senate. The New York Times has more.
