My friend Joshua and I were talking today about the state of the population and social situation in India versus China. I mentioned India's prominently low ranking on the U.N.'s Human Development Index versus China's much higher ranking and we talked about the fact the India is likely to succeed China as the world's most populous country in the not too distant future. Well, you can benefit from our discussion by reading my latest article, overview of India's population. Once you read, come back to the blog and let me know what you think. Wikipedia’s.org’s article “Demographics of India” also shows the birth rate differences among different Indian religious groups. From 1991-2001, Indian Muslims (13.4% of Indians) increased the most at 29.5% (and are also the least literate group at only 50% literate), while Hindus (80.5% of Indians) increased by 20.3%. Sikhs, found mainly in the N.W. Punjab state, increased the least, and are notorious for aborting female babies – I don’t know if Sikhs’ high emigration rate abroad affects these figures). I’d be interested to know what the birth rate is in Bangalore (modern high-tech city) or also in Kerala state (S.W. tip of India) as it’s supposed to be the most educated and enlightened state of India.
