Switzerland and the European Union

Refiloe from South Africa wrote to ask why Switzerland is not a member of the European Union. While the Swiss Parliament would love to join the European Union, Swiss voters aren't so keen on the idea. Two referenda (in 1992 and 2001) have both failed nationwide. Nonetheless, the Parliament maintains its application with the EU for membership and the European Union is welcome to Switzerland's membership at any point in the future.
