The No Child Left Behind law is up for revision in Congress and in the new version the subject of geography, while indicated as a core subject in the law, is the only academic subject not designated funding in the law. The Association of American Geographers is asking those who are friends of geography and interested in the future of geographic education in the United States to take action by writing to Congress. Thanks to GeoLounge for bringing this to my attention!

Geography is as important to understanding the world as solving the problem of world hunger is as crucial to us becoming a more humane society. Our children need to learn the current geopolitical climate of the world to learn about different cultures, different societies and so learn that everything about learning compassion for those who are less fortunate. We need funding for geography to keep geography in our schools.

No child left behind in bad legislation and the whole concept needs re-thinking. The inclusion of geography is an improvement, but it does not correct the problems created by no child left behind. The present legislation has turned teachers away from creative teaching to teaching for a test. The standards are based upon students achievement and does not address the conditions at the home. The school is expected to solve all the problems. Yes, I would truly like for Geography, both physical and cultural to be taught at all levels of public schools, but social studies teachers must have some ownership in the Geography curriculum and not being forced by Federal legislation.
