For the second year in a row, the area of the Amazon basin rainforest deforested has been reduced. Brazil's Environmental Ministry reports that 8,774 square miles (22,724 square km) were chopped down from August 2005-July 2006, versus 11,745 square miles (30,419 square km) the previous year. Let's hope this most excellent trend continues! Source: New York Times
