For over a decade the idea of a Mediterranean Union (a southern and southeastern cousin to the European Union) has been tossed about. Some are thinking of a Mediterranean Union as a first step for countries like Turkey, which wants EU membership. A Mediterranean Union could also be a way of improving peace, stability, and oil access throughout the region for the European Union. It's an interesting idea and the New York Times writes about the topic. What do you think of a Mediterranean Union?

The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, speaks a lot about this idea.
Fascist leader, Benito Mussolini, called the Mediterranean, “Mare Nostrum” (“Our Ocean”) meaning that any lands touching the Mediterranean were
rightfully Italian, in an attempt to revive the ancient Roman Empire.
Geographically & economically speaking, it is a very good idea. Politically speaking, it is going to be be a big challenge. Issues relating on these subjects must be settled first:
1. Greece & Turkey
2. Greece, Turkey & Cyprus
3. Arab nations and Israel
4. Disputed islands along the Med sea
The idea is good, but there is no interest from the north european countries to finance such a project.
Also, it is difficult to reach that before all these countries assume a real democracy.
Is there consensus about which contries are “Mediterranean”?
Do they all have the Mediterranean climate if you take climate as a measure? Egypte doesn’t have it.
Or lying on the borders of the Sea itself? In that case Portugal should be let out..
Cultural? What binds these countries?
I greatly appreciate such idea
I think it’s agood idea. That will make countries more clauser and it will be more easy to travel between them.
