Taiwan Rejected Again For U.N. Membership

By , About.com GuideJuly 24, 2007

Follow me on:

While Taiwan exists as a de facto country, it was rejected for the fifteenth time by the United Nations for membership in the world body. The UN rejected Taiwan due to Beijing's instance that there is one China and that Taiwan is not an independent entity, despite all evidence to the contrary. Thus, the UN fails to recognize a true country due to political pressure from a member of the Security Council and the world's most populous nation.

Taiwan deserves to be seen and accepted in our world today as an independent nation, and if the UN is to develop any real significance as a deeply influential…even a governing…world political body, it must first learn develop its courage to stand up against and resist the bullying of powerful countries like China, the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and any others who would lead us to our own demise to satisfy their own greed and insatiable hunger for control. China has no right to any control over the destiny of the Taiwanese people. It’s about time the UN grew a spine. You would think they would have learned a few lessons by now.

i think its time Taiwan should be recognized to be an independent nation. I always look at Taiwan being a separate country.

I agree with the other posts…if there is a true UN, seems to me that one nation shouldn’t be able to trump all the other votes. I wish there could be a recount…Taiwan is a significant economic, cultural, and intellectual contributor to our world, so what if ONE other nation is in protest-shouldn’t all the other votes count?

Time to recognize Taiwan has long passed. They have a significant place in the world and it is time to recognize them.

If Taiwan is truly part of China, why have they (Chinese gov’t) never done anything to assert control, economically or miltarily? The reason is that China still lives in a dream world on this issue. The U.N., established to bring peace and justice in world politics, has allowed the same kind of bullying that it is designed to abolish. Shame!

I think it’s more than time that while we can, we throw off the Marxist rule ONCE AND FOR ALL! We are sitting ducks, we need to wake up! When was the last time you saw something that was labeled – “Made in America” on it!
