By , About.com GuideJuly 16, 2007

Follow me on:

At 10:13 a.m. on Monday, July 16, 2007 (local time), a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit near the west coast of Honshu, Japan. Eight people have been reported killed and hundreds injured. The earthquake also caused a leak at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in the world.

Then, at 11:17 p.m., another large earthquake hit Japan, this one a 6.8 magnitude. Worried about potential tsunamis, Japan is watching its coasts very carefully.
