FP Passport reports on Canada's strong desire to protect their sovereignty over their northern lands as ice begins to melt and waterways, such as the Northwest Passage, begin to become accessible. Due to the value of the waterways and the potentially resource-rich islands, Canada is increasing its military presence in the (now) icy north. As Prime Minister Stephen Harper states, "Canada has a choice when it comes to defending our sovereignty over the Arctic. We either use it or lose it."
