Next March, Taiwan is planning a referendum to allow its citizens to vote as to whether to apply for United Nations membership under the name Taiwan. The referendum, likely to be passed by Taiwan's independent-minded citizens, is also seen as a way for Taiwan to officially change its name from the Republic of China to Taiwan. The U.N. membership aspect of the referendum is not likely to be accepted by the organization, where China would likely veto any such idea (Taiwan is one of only two non-member countries of the United Nations.)

I assume that the other country not to be a member of the U.N. is North Korea. Is that right?
Hi Marty! The other country is actually the Vatican City. -Matt
