Japan's young adult population had declined dramatically over the past few years. In in 1992, the number of Japanese 18-year-olds 2.05 million in 1992 and has dropped to 1.3 million this year. By 2009, estimates show the number dropping to 1.21 million. Due to this population loss, Japanese universities are doing all they can to recruit students. The New York Times reports on such efforts as hot springs, karaoke rooms, dorms with only single rooms, and unique majors such as golf culture and celebrity business.
