Today, July 1, marks the ten-year anniversary of the reunification of Hong Kong with China and the formation of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong under Chinese control. It was on this day ten years ago that the United Kingdom's 99-year lease on Hong Kong expired. Look back to that time with my 1997 article on the handover.

Comments
The lease on Hong Kong did NOT expire, the lease on the New Territories (peninsula attached to mainland China, north of Hong Kong Island) expired. Hong Kong Island could have remained under UK control indefinitely, but they decided to divest it anyways.
