Foreign Policy has published their Failed States Index 2007, which rates countries on their relative stability. According to the index, the countries that are least stable are: 1) Sudan, 2) Iraq, 3) Somalia, 4) Zimbabwe, 5) Chad, 6) Ivory Coast, 7) Democratic Republic of the Congo, 8 ) Afghanistan, 9) Guinea, and 10) Central African Republic. It is sad that eight of the ten are African countries. The other two are in the Greater Middle East but have a significant U.S. military presence. Hat Tip to Catholicgauze!

For the past ten years Somalia has been two separate countries. Very unstable southern Somalia with capital at Mogadishu AND relatively stable unrecognized “Somiland” or “Puntland” in the north with capital at Hargeisa. Why don’t the USA, UK, and African countries recognize Somaliland?
Good question; I wonder why as well. It’s very stable compared to the rest of the country
