Once unified and working toward peace, the Gaza Strip and West Bank have been torn asunder as Hamas has taken complete control of the Gaza Strip and the more moderate Fatah controls (for now) the West Bank. What does the future hold? Will there be a three-state solution? Will Egypt be invited to take over the Gaza Strip? Why isn't the United Nations condemning the intra-Palestinian violence? I don't expect Gaza to become a democratic entity anytime soon now that Hamas has control. Maybe my Palestine is Not a Country article can help?

For some reason I feel things will get alot worse for everyone before things get better.
Very timely and sensitive comments, Matt. Could job on bringing us up to date geographically. Thanks!
Timely comment, but a little ‘Westocentric’?
Hamas does happen to be the (loosely) democratically elected government.
They’re popular there, if not in the USA.
Fatah, rightly or wrongly, are seen by many as the Quislings or ‘Uncle Toms’.
The facts, however unpalatable, should be considered alongside comment.
Indeed Surreyman, Rosenberg editorializes when he uses the word ‘moderate’ with Abbas, you are right that the word ‘quisling’ might be more appropriate. As you say, Hamas was elected – in free elections pressed upon the Palestinians by the US. But if Abbas is a moderate, then can we say the Israeli govt – all Israeli govts – are immoderate? It is Israel that controls all three gates of ingress and egress (even Rafah), and Israel that controls air- and sea-space. Thus what we have is a state of permanant siege imposed by Israel. Its no wonder internecine fighting has broken out. Yet, somehow Israel gets credit for its ‘humanitarian concern.” One can only hope that Abbas does not sell out Palestine just to take the US/Israel boot off his country’s neck.
