The blog The Map Room provides a great entry about a group that's publishing imaginary transit maps of Los Angeles - the maps look as though they were create for a real subway or light rail system in L.A., with routes and stations in good locations for access. Take a look at this very interesting map.

I thoroughly enjoy your sight, and am a big fan of all types of geograghy. Newsflash: The Greater Los Angeles area DOES have commuter trains that go south from Ventura via “Metrolink” and south to San Diego called “Sounder”. There are also light rail lines, “Blue Line”, “Yellow Line”, etc. as well as very extensive bus routes. Most of these have been running for years and are still expanding; so this conceptual map is a lot more factual than you think. The systems are not as well-known as those in large Eastern areas, there are no movies, musicals, or TV shows featuring them. But, when you consider that the population of LA [city] alone is over 4 million, let alone all the outlying counties that are filling up with commuters; along with the truck traffic from the busiest port on the West Coast, tourists, and locals who must use their cars-solutions had to be found; beyond building more freeways. There is still much left to do, and it is expensive and resisted by many. Higher gas prices are making a small difference in traffic congestion, and eating huge chunks out of paychecks. Total tax for fuel here in CA is 18 cents/gal., so we’re always paying much more for gas than much of the country. So, there’s your update on the LA’s efforts towards mass transit & reduced air pollution.
