Protecting the Great Wall of China, Finally

By , About.com GuideMay 17, 2007

Follow me on:

Last December, China enacted its first nationwide legislation protecting the Great Wall of China. The law prohibits taking bricks, vandalizing the wall, holding raves on the wall, and building houses on the wall. Shortly after the law was passed a construction company was fined about US $6500 for removing part of the wall to build an illegal highway. National Geographic has more about the wall and its neglect over time.

I found this article to be quite interesting and informative. I never knew these facts before about the Great Wall. I live in Taiwan, so maybe someday I’ll go and see the wall, that is if it doesn’t disappear first :)

Sorry about the duplicate. After pressing the “say it” button, I was expecting my message to look like it went through and when it didn’t, I pressed it again not realizing a duplicate was made :)

The problem is not so much that protection was not taken seriously but that the wall is just way too long to be actively protected.

I think that protecting the wall is a very high need for the Chinese. They cherish this wall and it shows us Americans or Canadians or Puerto Ricans how good other ethnicities can be! They built this wall with great and grand effort and now we can see it from space! What other man-made object can we see from space with the naked eye? We have to preserve this lovely wall for the future generations to see and enjoy. Thank you and PRESERVE THE GREAT WALL! :)

The Great Wall of China

This amazing wall was built over 2,000 years ago. In Chinese, the wall is called “Wan-Li Qang-Qeng”. This means 10, 000 Li Long Wall. The man who built the Great Wall was the emperor of China, Qin Shi Huangdi. Qin was the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty. The dynasty was from 221 B.C. to 206 B.C.

The emperor constructed the Great Wall as a fortification unit. China was just united as its own, so he felt it was necessary to have some defense. He decided to connect the old walls. These 4 old fortification walls were built in 700 B.C.! Armies were stationed on the Great Wall as a first defense against the invading Huns or as they knew, Hsiung Nu . They would fire a shot to signal that the invaders were going to attack.

The Great Wall is one of the largest wall construction projects ever made. It stretches across the mountains of northern China. It is constructed of masonry, rocks and packed-earth. It is over 5,000 km long. Its thickness ranges from 4.5 to 9 meters (15 to 30 feet) and was up to 7.5 meters (25 feet) tall. In the Ming Dynasty, the wall was enlarged to 6, 400 km (4, 000 miles). Watch towers and cannons were also added during this 200 year renovation period. The wall can be seen from Earth’s orbit, but not from the moon!
