Galileo, the European Union's answer to GPS, is on hold as the public-private project has become mired in disputes. Now, the EU wants to make Galileo a public-financed project to provide a Global Positioning System for Europe. The 30 satellites of Galileo were scheduled to be operational by 2011. Now, that start date is likely to be significantly delayed. China is now working on their own GPS called Beidou and Russia is moving forward on their Glonass system. The New York Times has more on Galileo.
