Life Expectancy in Iraq

By , About.com GuideMay 8, 2007

Follow me on:

Due to the years of war and violence in Iraq, it is one of the few non-African countries to have a drop in life expectancy. Iraqi life expectancy in 1990 for males and females from birth was 66.5, now the Population Reference Bureau reports that life expectancy for both sexes in Iraq has dropped to a mere 59 and for males alone the life expectancy from birth is 57.

I teach a course on population and have been telling my students that I am completly conviced that reduced life expectancies are due to wars as opposed to “overpopulation” and other issues.

Chalk that up to the Bush Administration too.

I wouldn’t blame the Bush Administration for the impending civil war going on right now. A lot of Iraqi deaths are directly connected to sectarian violence, NOT the Bush Administration or the War on Terror.

It’s a sad state of affairs when a human has come to an acceptance of death with no grief to his/hers own species due to one or a group of persons actions not related to the end user. Separate but equal?! Not everyone thinks and agrees with the actions on either side yet their life will pay the price for being so powerless and below the power line. Simply being born and living in the territory of war! If I turn the stove top on and you were sitting on it and you couldn’t get off, you would burn because of me! Get it? Who will pay for the sins of death committed by the dead long gone from past actions commuted and unresolved!

The life expectancy rate as of 2009 is actually 69.9. So you might want to update your as of 2007 life expectancy rate of 59.

The Iraqi population figures are made artifically high with the Kurdistan areas included (a seperate nation in all but name), take that away and the rest of Iraq drops 10 years.
