The new tornado scale in the United States, known as the Enhanced Fujita Scale for Tornado Damage, is an upgrade of the Fujita Scale. The Enhanced Fujita Scale took effect in the United States on the first of February this year. The new tornado scale is based on not only wind speed but also on observed damage to structures. It is far more complicated and takes some time to determine the magnitude of a tornado but it is far more efficient in its categorization.

So I’m wondering the purpose of the more complicated Fujita scale. Is it used to more accurately determine the strength depending on what the tornado hit? It seems like it’s a bit overboard. One would think that the old scale was sufficient.
