In a speech on Japan's low fertility rate, the country's health minister called Japanese women of childbearing age "baby-making machines" and recommended that they not postpone giving birth so that the country's population of young people does not fall too low. Yes he does sound a little brash… but it is true that the develped “North” has an increasinly ageing population. something has to be done, such as in France and now Japan. the developed world is going to see massive labour shortages unless we do something.
the use of the words “baby-making machines” may not have been ideal and are reminicent of the Fascist battles for birth in Italy and Germany in the post WWII period. but needs must and in theory the only baby-making machines we have are women…
