Most U.S. Adult Women Unmarried

By , About.com GuideJanuary 17, 2007

Follow me on:

For the first time in U.S. history, less than half of all women over the age of 15 are married, compared to 53% of all men of the same age. According to an analysis by the New York Times, in 1950 and 1960, 65% of all women over 15 were married.

A small point: I believe your interpretation of the Times article is a bit off, Matt. The article doesn’t claim that fewer than half of the women over the age of 15 aren’t married (in fact, 54% are). The article is careful to claim that fewer than half of those women are living with their spouse. According to the article, 5% of women in the study group are married, but not living with their spouses, either through separation or because their spouse is absent for some reason (e.g. on active duty in the military).

It’s pretty certain, however, that the trend will prove you to be correct before too long.

I really enjoy your work. Thanks for the Friday morning perk.
