According to documents discovered in archives, in 1956 the prime ministers of France and the United Kingdom met to discuss a possible merge of the two nations, with the Queen as the head of state of France. That discussion fizzled but then the two leaders discussed the possibility of France becoming part of the Commonwealth of Nations. Read the full report from The Guardian.
